Ready for a literary escape?

My Southern Journey: True Stories from the Heart of the South by Rick Bragg

From New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize laureate, Rick Bragg, this funny collection of 72 short essays reflects life in the South of the United States, and they involve some enduring Southern truths about home, place, spirit, food, and the region’s geography, including his native Alabama, Cajun country, and the Gulf Coast.

You’ll dive into some regional obsessions, from college football and fishing to mayonnaise and the local enthrallment with fishing. All this will lead to a much better understanding of local culture and values.

Each piece is steeped in personal memories and experiences. The language flows beautifully, the tales hold your attention, and reading the book is a pure pleasure. Also, fair warning, be prepared to laugh out loud at some of the stories.

Happy Place by Emily Henry

Are you ready to dive into the delightful world of romcom escapism? Then “Happy Place” is a good bet for your vacation reading list. TikTok sensation and New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry tells the story of a couple who, despite their long breakup, pretend to still be together for a vacation with their best friends. However, how easy can it be to fake their engagement, lie to their friends, and hide their feelings?

As you find out, you’ll definitely connect with the well-developed and authentic characters Emily Henry has created and get tangled in the complexities of their relationship, love, and personal growth. This book is rich in detail, vividly portrayed, and brimming with humor, yet it will also evoke moments of sadness at times.

Beach Reading by Emily Henry

Another title by Emily Henry that makes for a fabulous vacation reading experience is “Beach Read” from 2020. The book follows two writers – January Andrews, a successful romance novelist, and Augustus Everett, an acclaimed literary fiction author.

As fate would have it, they are former college rivals who end up living in neighboring beach houses, both struggling with writer’s block. They strike a deal to challenge each other – January will try to write literary fiction, while Augustus will attempt to write a happy romance novel.

The book is a heartfelt exploration of themes like grief, betrayal, and learning to love again. Like the title above, it captivates for its engaging characters, clever premise, and poignant emotional depth. And with a title like that, we just couldn’t resist adding it to this list!

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

“Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever.”

Set in the 1980s, Malibu Rising centers around the annual party hosted by the four children of famous singer Mick Riva as the reader navigates their relationships, family dynamics, and the fallout from their father’s past in a vividly described party interspersed with flashbacks to past events. The climactic event will change the whole plot.

The author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, is another New York Times bestselling author and has established a reputation for writing engaging, character-driven stories that often explore the lives of fictional celebrities and public figures.

The Beach by Alex Garland

How about delving into something a tad more thrilling? Written by Alex Garland, The Beach is a cult classic and a seminal work of travel fiction published in 1996 that draws from the author’s experiences as a backpacker in Southeast Asia.

A tale of paradise found and innocence lost, the story follows Richard, a free-spirited traveler who stumbles upon a paradise-like island off the coast of Thailand, where a utopian society has taken root.

However, as it usually happens with utopian stories, the dream quickly becomes a nightmare. The story is well-written and involving, inspiring a sense of adventure in the readers and reminding us what it is like to be young and free.

In 2000, the book was adapted into a visually stunning movie by Danny Boyle, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tilda Swinton.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

This touching tale is set in the small town of Whistle Stop, Alabama, where it explores friendships, love, and self-discovery in a humorous way. The characters are endearingly funny, heartwarming, and authentic.

It’s a story about two women: Evelyn, who is feeling down in middle age, and Mrs. Threadgoode, an elderly lady sharing her life story. Her tale involves two more women, the adventurous tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth, who runs a café.

In this story, as the past is revealed, the present is forever changed. By the end of it, you’ll want to take a trip and visit the Whistle Stop Cafe.

The author of several acclaimed novels, including this one, is widely regarded as a beloved and accomplished author, with a devoted following for her heartwarming, character-driven stories.

The book was turned into a movie, Fried Green Tomatoes, in 1991, which was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Scripter Award for Best Screenplay.

Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Published in 1942 and now considered a classic in American literature, “Cross Creek” is a memoir that describes Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ life and experiences living in the remote Florida hamlet of Cross Creek for 13 years.

She recounts her experiences dealing with farmhands and wildlife while managing an orange grove for thirteen years in rural Florida—from managing a seventy-two-acre orange grove to dealing with runaway pigs and challenging farmhands. Her writing is filled with humor and spirit, and her descriptions of nature are vivid.

Rawlings, who died in 1953, achieved major success with her 1938 novel “The Yearling,” for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. But this title feels like a true Florida find that will make your quiet moments on a trip to the Gulf Coast a lot more meaningful.
